Morning water cooler

Monday morning and the water cooler is back. It’s been pretty hectic lately which hasn’t afforded me the time to write as much as I’d like but It’s nice to put a little time aside to jot a few things down.  Hope you enjoy and with a little luck it might be a little more regular in this space.

We got another big dump of snow in yxe last night. It came in rather suddenly too. It was a little cold in the morning but a pretty nice day and then.. BAM! The roads were and still are a nightmare so take it easy. In the blink of an eye it can turn tragic so please take it easy. Nothing is so important that it can’t wait for you to reschedule or go slow.

I’m not sure about the Mayan calendar and all the talk about the world ending but my advent calendar counts me down until the new year…

The U of S Huskies enjoyed a sweep over Lethbridge this past weekend at Rutherford. It’s always good to head into the Christmas break on a high and this team has been up and down to this point.

There have been times where this team hasn’t looked like a championship team but they still continue to find ways to win. In my opinion you know you have assembled a good group of players when you come out with less than your best effort and still find a way to win. This team will have to find another gear if they want to come away with a national championship in March.

Saturday night it was off to Unity for play-by-play of the Sask West Hockey League on Access 7. The Unity Minors skated to an 11-5 win over the Kerrobert Tigers.  Former Melville Millionaire Scott Hennings had 3 goals in the win for Unity.

My parents had been in Edmonton to see Paul McCartney perform so I decided to go through North Battleford and meet them.  Dad hopped in with me and came to Unity for the game. He sat up in the press box with me and we had a lot of fun. It was a great opportunity to spend some quality time together and I hope I get the chance to do it again sometime.

The Foam Lake Panthers and the Foam Lake Composite School should be proud. They were the top Saskatchewan school in Under Armour’s Finding Undeniable contest. They finished eighth overall in Canada and just missed out on the finals and a chance at $100k in gear from  Under Armour.

I tried my best to help out Bill Ruetz and wish they could have had a better fate but if you look at their page that I posted earlier, you will see all that they did along the way. Some incredible school pride shown by the students in Foam Lake. Way to go!

Some interesting notes from sports in the last while:

Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun tweeted: “The average TV audience for Stanley Cup Final was 2.67 million in Canada. Super Bowl did 7.3 million. Grey Cup did 5.9 mill. Interesting.”

There were also some interesting notes while watching the Grey Cup. Like this one from former Rider Luc Mullinder: “I think it’s awesome that the performer in the 1st ever Grey Cup is now singing in the 100th one… #100GreyCup #CFL”

He was referring to the half-time performer Gordon Lightfoot.

Former Star Phoenix sports reporter Cory Wolfe re-tweeted: “Why do the top two buttons of shirts always have to be chest-baringly low and windpipe-crushingly high, respectively?” I couldn’t agree more!

Two shows I watch and really enjoy: “Go On.” It’s a sitcom where Matthew Perry plays a sports radio jock and has a great story line and is pretty funny. Not much about sports but adds enough to make it relevant to everyone. The second is “The League.” It’s about a group of friends in a fantasy football league and you can only imagine what goes on. There is a bit of a view discretion with it and it only makes it better. A hit for me every week.

I saw the new Brad Pitt movie over the weekend. Did not enjoy. Some of it was ok but the whole story line was lacking. Seemed like the show went nowhere. Wait until it’s rent-able on your TV or at least in the cheap seats.

I did also check out the final Twilight movie. Have to say I enjoyed myself and would recommend you go see it. If you haven’t seen the others maybe have someone catch you up first though so you aren’t distracting them with 1,000 questions like I did. Thank you for understanding again.

One of my tasks in December is to make a list of all the movies I want to see (and trust me there are a few. For a guy who loves to watch movies, I have been lacking lately) and start checking them off. We’ll see how far I get without shunning the world.

Might be some exciting plans after Christmas. Hopefully there will be something to announce in the coming days.  Stay tuned.

I’ve become a Georges St-Pierre fan and really admire his whole approach to life and the sport. It will be interesting to see if the super-fight ever materializes and if he wants to do it. Either way I’m in his corner.

Ok, I think that is all for today. If you get to, enjoy your snow day and if not, try and enjoy the drive to work!
