University Cup Week
Welcome to University Cup Week here at darrendupont.com. It is going to be a very fun week so buckle up and enjoy the ride.
We’ll have full coverage of the Potash Corp University Cup presented by Co-op here on the site and it’s very exciting to be a part of it. The Edmonton Journal’s Evan Daum will join me to provide analysis during the week and I’m really looking forward to it.
It all kicks off on Wednesday for the Sasktel CIS Awards Gala with CBC’s Ron MacLean. Then on Thursday the puck will drop for real on the tournament.
Many have voiced their displeasure with the format of the Potash Corp Cup. The current format has two pools of three teams each. Each team will play two round-robin games against opponents in their respective pools. The top team from each pool will then meet in the final to determine the champion.
The glaring flaw with the system showed its head last year when three teams (including the Huskies) were tied with 1-1 records after round-robin play. The tie-breaker came down to goals-for/goals-against. Not the way you want your tournament to end.
Well I have good news. Change is on the way, just not quite yet.
Sources say that it has been approved to add a pair of semi-final games to the tournament which will take affect at NEXT year’s championship in Saskatoon. The semi-final games would be of the crossover variety (1A vs 2B and 1B vs 2A). Great news and can’t believe it hasn’t happened already!
With the tournament rankings released last night and the schedule determined we now know the Huskies will open their tournament on Thursday night against #2 UNB.
All seven games from the tournament will also be webcast live on www.CIS-SIC.tv.
That’s it for now but be sure to check back as there will be continued coverage all week and continued updates via Twitter at Twitter.com/darrendupont.
Enjoy the week!
