Huskies sweep MRU, move into third

ImageIt was a good weekend for the U of S Huskies men’s hockey team as they picked up two very important wins and moved into sole position of third place in Canada West.

Friday night Ryan McDonald, Sean Aschim and Matt Spafford each had a pair of goals as the Huskies beat the Cougars 8-4 at Rutherford Rink.

Friday night’s game stats are here.

On Saturday night the Huskies scored three times in the opening period en route to a 4-1 win completing the weekend sweep.  Kenton Dulle, Brennan Bosch, Jesse Ross and McDonald each scored in the win.

The power play for the Huskies went 3/8 on Saturday night while the penalty kill was 8/9.  Special teams has been an issue for the Huskies all season.

In Calgary the Dinos earned wins of 8-2 and 9-0 over the Regina Cougars to remain on top of the Canada West standings.  The two losses for the Cougars allow the Huskies to climb into sole possession of third place in Canada West.

The Alberta Golden Bears played host to the Manitoba Bisons and were impressive in an 8-1 win on Friday night.  The Bears held the Bisons to just 9 shots in the win dominating the shots on goal 50-9 including 22-2 in the second period.

Saturday night was a different story as the Bisons won 5-4 while still being outshot 39-24.

The weekend’s results should be enough for Calgary to overtake Alberta in the CIS Top 10 rankings.  I fully expect the Dinos to be number one in the country come Tuesday morning.  Also, the Huskies may be able to find their way into the top 10 once again.

The Canada West 2013 portion of the schedule has now come to a close and will reopen in January when the Manitoba Bisons visit Saskatoon to face the Huskies at the Credit Union Centre.
