Hulak thriving in Texas

Former University of Saskatchewan men’s hockey star Derek Hulak has found his groove in Texas.

The former Huskie and Saskatoon Blade is in his first full season in the AHL after joining the Texas Stars late last season following the Huskies’ runner-up finish at the Potash Corp University Cup last March.  Hulak was named tournament MVP and finished second in the nation in scoring.

Upon joining the Stars, Hulak scored his first goal on his first shot and, while in-and-out of the line-up, Hulak earned his name on the Calder Cup as part of the championship Texas Stars.

This year Hulak is off and running. He is tied for third in team scoring with 32 points (13 goals, 19 assists) and has played in 52 of the Stars’ 57 games. Among the team’s top eight scorers, Hulak is the only one with a positive plus/minus rating at +2.

A recent article picked up by SB Nation says that Hulak should be Dallas’ next free-agent signing. You can read the article here.

It’s hard not to like Derek Hulak, the recent recipient of the Saskatoon Kinsmen’s Athlete-of-the-Year award, and we will continue to pull for the guy as he continues his journey and potentially cracking an NHL roster.
